Greetings from the Sharp Electronics dealer show in Dallas TX. We are here with about 300 dealers, analysts, press and more at the Gaylord Hotel. This year celebrates Sharp’s 40th anniversary in the document business. We will write more about the dealer show later but this is a quick look at what we saw.
This was the first dealer show for president Doug Albregts – a fairly young executive who never worked in this channel. As this was his first show, dealers were anxious to see how him in action. This is especially true considering who he replaced last year. Ed McGlaughlin was a copier industry veteran and dealers really liked him. Albregts has a great sense of humor and it was seen quickly as Sharp showed a video parody, identifying him as the most interesting non-copier man in the world – a spoof of the popular Dos Equis commercial. It was a hilarious video and we’re hoping Sharp will eventually allow us to post.

In order to provide consistent high-security across vulnerable networks, the CAC solution provides Samsung Multifunction Printers (MFPs) with protection from potential threats such as theft or redirection of data. With a CAC solution installed, high-security facilities can now restrict access to the MFP’s walk-up functions (e.g., copy, fax, scan-to-email or scan-to-fax functions), preventing sensitive documentation from being sent to unauthorized individuals.
Over 1,500 MFPs and printers allow you to compare MFPs from more brands than any other service.

– NEW A3/A4 Selling: How to sell against competitive channels, customer strategies, technology discussion and more.
The emergence of A4, or, letter-size multifunctional printers has created a technology shift in today’s printer market. Traditionally, A3 console copier/printers have been a staple in offices. Desktop printers were expensive to operate and offered poor and often unacceptable performance compared to A3 devices.
At prices only a fraction of A3 MFPs that can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars and vast improvements to productivity and features, customers are beginning to replace A3 MFPs with A4.

Industry Rumors…
Ex Canon President Tod Pike Goes to Samsung
Ricoh Reorganization Coming in April
US Dealerships on Hiring Sprees
Industry Publication Puts Out Issue Without MPS Topic on Front Cover
The above are industry rumors. We heard these rumors from sources deemed to be reliable but we make no claim as to their validity.

Document Management Can Be a Strange World for a Copier Rep
Document Management can be a strange word. For some, it means "scan to network" and for others it is a whole workflow solution. Finding a solid document management provider can be a real nightmare for a small business because of the steep costs of entry. Regardless of what solution you choose, if there is any real "document management" and not just a scan to folder scenario, paying less than $10,000 to implement it is almost impossible.
We help demystify the A3 VS A4 sales process and help your team understand how to educate their customers on the benefits and limitations of A3 and A4 products.
Help your reps learn how to inform customers of the pitfalls of buying cheap A4 through alternative channels.

Last May at the Toshiba National Dealer Meeting, we introduced two new series of color MFPs that feature our innovative e-BRIDGE X controller platform. The product of several years of research and development, the e-Bridge X platform offers several enhancements to security and connectivity. These color models have been extremely successful. This month, we’ll be introducing a whole new line up of monochrome products built on that same platform, which we anticipate will be just as popular…

OK. How much worse can it get? This morning (1/6), Eastman Kodak stock opened at $0.42 per share giving it a market cap of not much more than $113 million (that’s million, not billion). The strategy of selling a valuable patent portfolio for billions has not yet worked. To make matters even more bleak, Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Kodak’s credit rating, citing the "probability" of bankruptcy.
A few weeks ago, Kodak flew a group of analysts (including yours truly) to Rapid City South Dakota to tour a truly unique commercial print facility. The event was an eye opener for me. First, it was one of the largest commercial print facilities I’ve seen. It was by far, the cleanest. You could eat off the floors. It was virtually all digital, with the major exception of a Heidelberg six-color analog press. Even that press had been fitted with an ink-jet head to print variable addresses at full system speed…

As we wind down the year I thought it would be interesting to contact 52 companies from all segments of the office technology/imaging industry and attempt to get their perspectives on what they consider their company or organization’s most significant accomplishment or highlight of 2011. I’m presenting these 52 highlights over the final three weeks of December. Here are the first two groups of highlights. I’ll present the final group next week.
Strategy Development
"Over 2011 Strategy Development’s most significant accomplishment was helping dealers transform their business to meet the realities of the current industry environment. Our team was able to help companies adopt an effective MPS business strategy; increase their market share in the traditional equipment space with a comprehensive go-to-market strategy that reduces sales rep turnover, and increases sales rep productivity; and, optimize service operations by helping companies achieve service gross margins exceeding 55 percent. We added a substantial number of clients and had another record setting year. It has been rewarding for the team to be able to help so many in the industry-thank you!?" As we wind down the year I thought it would be interesting to contact 52 companies from all segments of the office technology/imaging industry and attempt to get their perspectives on what they consider their company or organization’s most significant accomplishment or highlight of 2011.
It has been rewarding for the team to be able to help so many in the industry-thank you!?"
